Flashback: OneCoin was found in 2014 by Ruja Ignatova, a Bulgarian national. It was promoted as a cryptocurrency by two offshore companies OneCoin Ltd (based in Dubai) and OneLife Network Ltd (based in Belize). It was promised to be bigger than bitcoin but it was nothing but a multi-level marketing Ponzi scheme designed to lure investor’s money.
Despite getting blacklisted by several countries and warning by crypto experts, OneCoin’s popularity kept on increasing until Ruja Ignatova disappeared with more than $4 billion in 2017, right before the US government released a warrant for her arrest.
However, Ruja’s brother Konstantin Ignatova was arrested in March 2019, who also pleaded guilty to numerous charges like fraud, money laundering, etc. He is now facing 90 years of imprisonment in federal prison.
It is not the first movie inspired by this scam. BBC has also made podcasts and episodes based on Dr. Ruja Ignatova which they called “The Missing Cryptoqueen“.
